A lead magnet is the thing you give away in exchange for an email address. It might be on your blog, a squeeze page or an offer you post on Facebook.

Ideally, your lead magnet should be a simple and specific solution for your target market’s biggest challenge or question.

It’s an incredibly important piece of content because it’s the start to your sales funnel. If someone doesn’t grab your lead magnet, it’s unlikely you’ll have an opportunity to build a relationship with them, follow up and sell to them over time.

Today, I want to share 5 ways you can test, and hopefully improve, your lead magnet because higher conversions on it mean more people on your list and more future sales.

5 Things to Test On Your Lead Magnet

1. The Lead Magnet Itself

Your goal is to identify the biggest, most frustrating challenge your target market is facing and offer a solution. Test lead magnets that solve different challenges until you get the right one. For example, if you’re a marketing coach, does your audience want a marketing plan or do they want to know how to generate leads for free on Facebook?

2. The Format

Find out which format converts best: a downloadable pdf, a webinar, a video, a template or checklist, etc.

3. The Headline

Copywriting can make a huge difference for conversions. Be sure to test multiple versions of your headline, calling out to your ideal client, and being very specific about the challenge and pain point you’re going to help them solve.

4. The Opt-in Page or Form

Test the colors, the design, the pictures, the wording, the buttons, etc.

5. Location of Opt-in Form

You can test the left or right side of your blog, the top banner, a Welcome Gate, a stand alone squeeze page, a bar at the top or bottom of your website, an optin embedded in your blog posts, etc. You get the idea.

Pick one of the above to begin testing, rather than testing all of them at the same time. You need to be able to tell which change produced the increase in conversions.
