Simple and Free Tool for Being More Productive

One of the biggest challenges of working from home or starting an online business on the side is that there are so many distractions!

At home, you can always find something else to do…

  • Clean up
  • Cook dinner
  • Walk the dog
  • Water the plants
  • Fold the laundry

And when you’re working online, just one click can lead you down an endless rabbit hole… (stumbling onto Facebook is often the worse for this)!

Here’s my #1 Productivity tool that will help you focus and accomplish infinitely more each day.

Be More ProductiveUse a stopwatch.

That’s it. Super simple, but incredibly effective.

Use one on your computer or one of your phone. Heck, you can even use a kitchen timer. Just get in the habit of working against the clock.

There’s something powerful about knowing you only have a few minutes to focus on and complete a task that moves you into action.

Our bodies and minds can only focus for about 50-90 minutes at a time. Then we need a physical and mental break to renew and refresh.

After reading The Power of Full Engagement, studying what other successful entrepreneurs like Eben Pagan does (he teaches this in his course Wake Up Productive), here are the 2 different time blocks I find work best:

  1. 50 minutes, 10 minute break (repeat 2 times for a total of 90 minutes and then take a longer, 30 minute break)
  2. 25 minutes, 5 minute break (called the Pomodoro Technique)

I personally use the longer stretch in the morning when I work my best and the shorter, 25 minute segments in the afternoon when my attention and energy are waining.

The key to using either strategy is to pick a single task you want to focus on and eliminate all other distractions.

No email or Facebook open. No Skype IMs. No texts or phone calls. Turn all that off.

Then set your timer, work against the clock, and go.

Give it a try this week and leave me a comment below letting me know how it worked for you!
